Details for Anaerobic Culture

Test Name: Anaerobic Culture
Alternate Name(s):
Laboratory: Microbiology (VH)
Specimen Type: Aspirates of abscesses, lesions or sinus, biopsies/tissues, body fluids.
Collection Information: The Anaerobic Transport system collection container MUST be used (black lid).

DO NOT USE the Starswab with the pink lid. Samples received in this transport system wil be rejected. Aspirates and fluids should be collected aseptically by needle and injected into anaerobic transport media.

Biopsies and tissues should be submerged in anaerobic transport media.

Aspirated fluid, biopsy or tissue is preferred to a swab. Swabs show significantly lower recovery rates than biopsies or aspirates.
