Collection Information: Bone - Send in sterile container.

Bone Marrow - Submit in a sterile container.

CSF - Submit 2 mL in a sterile container.

Respiratory:
Sputum - Have the patient rinse mouth and gargle with water. Instruct patient not to expectorate saliva or postnasal discharge. Collect early morning sample from deep productive cough. Select blood-stained or purulent material and send in a sterile container.
Tracheal Aspirate - Send as much as possible in a sterile container.
Bronchial Wash - Send a minimum of 5 mL in a sterile container.

Skin Scrapings, Subcutaneous Lesions or Exudates - Express pus or aspirate material from cysts or abscesses. Scrape encrusted portions from deep centre and edge of active lesions. Place in a sterile container. If necessary, add a small amount of saline to keep moist during transit.

Tissue - Collect tissue from the centre and edge of lesion. Place in a sterile container and add a small amount of saline to keep sample moist during transit.

Note:
Swabs are inferior to biopsy or aspirated samples. Do not use fixatives or preservatives. Transport as soon as possible.

Test Schedule: Referred out weekdays to the Public Health Laboratory.
