Specimen Type: Pericardial Fluid, Peritoneal Fluid, Pleural Fluid, Synovial Fluid, CAPD fluid, Aspirate, Vitreous Fluid
Collection Information: Clean the needle puncture site and disinfect. Allow to dry. Aspirate fluid or purulent material with a needle/syringe. Expel any air bubbles from syringe and inject into anaerobic transport media. Transport additional fluid or pus in a sterile container.

For CAPD (Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis) fluids, a minimum of 100 mL of fluid is collected in a small transfer pack or in 2 sterile, orange containers.

A swab of fluid is NOT an appropriate specimen.

Special Processing: When sample is received in anaerobic transport, it can be tested for both aerobic and anaerobic bacteria, if requested. Samples received in other containers can be processed for aerobic bacteria, fungus, mycobacterium or viruses. Please order the appropriate tests.
Comments: Clincal history is important for adequate testing.

Storage & Shipment: Pericardial fluid must be refrigerated after collection.

The other specimens must be stored at room temperature.

The specimen must be received within 24 hours of collection.
