Differential Bone Marrow
Laboratory: Flow Cytometry
Specimen Type: Bone marrow in K2 or K3 EDTA
Collection Information: Minimum volume of bone marrow required is 1 mL.

The bone marrow collection tube is provided in a kit supplied by CSR. (It is the Wards'/Units' responsibility to stock these kits).

If "touch films" of the bone marrow have been prepared at the bedside, they are to be sent with the bone marrow aspirate to the Investigational Hematology Laboratory at Victoria Hospital as well.

For referred-in (non-LHSC) samples:

1. From primary collection tube, prepare 4 push and 4 squash films. DO NOT STAIN.

2. Fix films in absolute methanol for 10 minutes.

3. Label all films with patientís name.

4. Air-dry and package in slide mailers.

5. Include the following:

∑ Requisition with patient demographics (HCN included)
∑ Relevant clinical history (reason for test request)
∑ Remainder of EDTA anticoagulated bone marrow aspirate sample
∑ CBC results
∑ Wright-Giemsa (or equivalent) peripheral blood film
∑ A fax number to which the report can be sent

6. Send to:

7. Notify laboratory (519-685-8500 ext 57450) prior to sending sample.

Interpretive Comments: The bone marrow report is prepared following examination of Wrights-Giemsa and Prussian Blue stained films. CBC results and possibly special cytochemical stained films also impact the interpretation.
Special Processing: Films must be prepared ASAP after collection.
