Interpretive Comments: Useful in diagnosing disorders of acid-base and water balance.

Monitoring compliance with a low salt diet. Urine chloride excretion approximates the dietary intake.

Urine chloride level <10 mmol/L in patients with a metabolic alkalosis are suggestive of chloride wasting from gut or sweat loss and may require replacement therapy.

High urine values of other halide ions (e.g. bromide, fluoride, iodide) may lead to falsely high readings on the chloride ion-selective electrode.
