Critical Value:
Interpretive Comments: This test quantitates the amount of C3c in the serum but does not test C3 function.
Decreased levels are associated with complement activation of either/both classical and alternative pathway(s), or genetic deficiency.
Major clinical manifestations include SLE, glomerulonephritis, pyogenic infections.
Special Processing:
Comments: C3 is normally run in conjunction with C4
Fresh samples have lower C3c than stored samples as C3 breaks down to C3c.
Turbidimetric assays not suitable for measurement of highly lipemic or hemolytic samples or samples containing high levels of circulating immune complexes.
Method of Analysis: Turbidimetry
