Clean the external canal with a mild detergent. Using a syringe aspirate technique, obtain fluid from the eardrum. Put fluid in a sterile container.

Ear drainage swabs
If eardrum is ruptured, collect exudate by inserting a sterile swab through an auditory speculum. Place swab in transport media.

Ear swabs
Use moistened swab to remove debris or crust from ear canal. Obtain sample by firmly rotating the swab in the outer canal.
