Collection Information: Blood:
Use the blood culture collection system.

Body fluids and Tissues:
Collect aseptically and place in a sterile container. Ensure that tissue samples are kept moist during transit with a small amount of sterile saline. Do not use transport media unless specimen can be easily retrieved from the transport media.

CSF:

Collect a minimum volume of 2 mL for analysis.

Respiratory samples:
Samples should be collected in a sterile container.

Swabs:
Swabs are not encouraged; however, specimens from sites such as the ear canal, mouth, throat and vagina are not readily collected by other means. See separate listings (ear, eye, mouth, throat and genital culture) for specific instructions on how to collect these samples. Place swabs in bacterial transport media.

Urine:
Urine should be collected using the B-D Vacutainer system for Microbiology samples
