Collection Information: This sample type cannot be processed as a STAT request. Samples are handled in a priority sequence and results are reported as they become available.

Collection of nasal swabs:

1. Insert swab into nostril until all cotton is inside and resistance is felt.
2. Rotate swab so that all surfaces of the mucosa are contacted.
3. Insert the same swab into the other nostril and repeat steps.
4. Insert the swab into transport medium and label the specimen.

Collection of perianal swabs:

1. Roll the swab at the skin located around the anus or rectal opening for 2-3 seconds. Swabs do not need to be inserted into the rectal orifice.
2. Insert the swab into transport medium and label the specimen.

NOTE:
If collecting both Nasal and Perianal samples, order only ONE test using the specimen type "Nasal/Perianal". Label one sample with the large bar code label and the other with a small bar code label. Place both swabs into the same biohazard collection bag.
