Reference Range: Negative for oligoclonal banding.

IgG: 10-30 mg/L
Albumin: <350 mg/L
IgG/Albumin Ratio: 0.00-0.23
IgG/Alb Index: 0.25-0.85 with no visible banding in electrophoresis

For accurate interpretation, the CSF and serum must be assayed together and the results compared.

Critical Value:
Interpretive Comments: For accurate interpretation, the CSF and serum must be assayed together and results compared.
The oligoclonal banding and CSF index are used in the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis. CSF IgG and Albumin levels are measured simultaneously. In addition to electrophoretic examination of CSF for bands, an index is calculated as follows: CSF IgG x Serum Albumin/Serum IgG x CSF Albumin. In MS the index is usually 1.5-2.0, along with positive bands in CSF electrophoresis. A low index suggests increased entry of serum proteins into CSF.
