Collection Information: Blood (EDTA): MUST be spun, separated and stored at 4C for shipment the next morning if there is a delay of ≥4 hours to the Microbiology laboratory
Fluids and CSF: Collect a minimum volume of 1 mL of CSF or sterile fluid
Lesion: Wipe vesicle with saline. Disrupt vesicle and collect fluid and cells from base of lesion.
Tissues: Place in sterile container
In general:
Swabs contained in the Viral Transport Kit should be used for collection. Scrapings and small pieces of tissue should be placed in Viral Transport Medial before sending to the lab. bulk specimens should be placed in sterile containers; add a small amount of viral transport media to prevent drying of tissue. Do not add Viral Transport Media to fluids or stools.
