Interpretive Comments: Please be advised that serum Amylase will be discontinued and will be replaced by serum Lipase at LHSC and St. Joseph’s Hospital as of December 1, 2019. Amylase testing will still be available for fluids and rare conditions other than acute pancreatitis.

Amylase has been used for the initial diagnosis of acute pancreatitis. However, Lipase is now the preferred test due to its (i) better sensitivity and specificity than total amylase, (ii) wider diagnostic window than amylase.
