Laboratory: Virology Laboratory
Specimen Type: Please refer to Special Processing below for each Group:
Group 1:
-Blood: 4 mL Lavender top (EDTA) Vacutainer tube
-Vitreous/Aqueous Fluid
Group 2:
-Fluid: Amniotic, ascitis, pleural samples sent to Public Health Laboratory for testing
-Tissue: samples sent to Public Health Laboratory for testing
Collection Information: Collect blood aseptically in a Vacutainer tube.

Samples collected late in the day should be spun and plasma separated within 4 hours. Store at 4C for shipment the next morning.

Fluids - Collect a minimum of 1 mL in a sterile container

Tissues - Collect in a sterile container
Test Schedule: Samples are tested on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.
STAT requests must be approved by a Medical Microbiologist.

Interpretive Comments: Molecular amplification techniques are to be used in conjunction with clinical findings.
Special Processing: For SRA:

After 9 pm: Centrifuge and aliquot plasma. Refrigerate at 4C and send to Microbiology the following morning.

Group 1: Plasma samples are indicated for transplant patient monitoring. Test will not be performed more than once in a 7 day period on these sample types.

Group 2/3: Serology is more appropriate for CMV infection screening in non-transplant patients.
Consultation with Medical Microbiologist is required in unusual clinical circumstances for this group.
