Collection instructions:
- Nasopharyngeal swab:

Insert flexible, fine-shafted swab into nasopharynx, rotate in circular manner to collect cellular material. Place swab in viral transport media
- Tracheal aspirate:
Aspirate sample into a trap. Transfer to a sterile container
- Expectorated sputum:
Have the patient rinse the mouth with water and then expectorate deep cough sputum directly into a sterile container. Do NOT induce sputum
- Bronchial Alveolar Lavage:
Collect a minimum volume of 1 mL of BAL. Transfer sample to a sterile container
Requisition: LHSC COVID-19 REQUISITION
Test Schedule: - For admitted or likely to be admitted patients and samples submitted from OHSS, testing is performed 7 days per week at PaLM Microbiology on nasopharyngeal swabs transported in viral or universal transport media
- Other swab types will be sent to PHL
- Lower respiratory specimens will be tested in-house and sent to PHL for parallel testing
- Other requests may be forwarded to PHL for testing
