Interpretive Comments: Secreted in response to high calcium levels. Elevated in medullary thyroid carcinoma, occasionally with other cancers, chronic renal failure, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, pernicious anemia, and pregnancy. A provocative test using pentagastrin may be used for confirmation of medullary thyroid carcinoma.
Special Processing: Freeze serum as soon as possible.
