Collection Information: COVID-19 TESTING POLICY AND GUIDELINES

For asymptomatic individuals without a known exposure to a COVID-19 case.

Collection instructions:

- Nasopharyngeal swab:

Insert flexible, fine-shafted swab into nasopharynx, rotate in circular manner to collect cellular material. Place swab in viral transport media
-Nasal/Mid-turbinate (deep nasal) swab
Insert swab 3-4 cm into EACH nostril, rotate in a circular manner for 3 seconds.

- Tracheal aspirate:
Aspirate sample into a trap. Transfer to a sterile container

- Expectorated sputum:
Have the patient rinse the mouth with water and then expectorate deep cough sputum directly into a sterile container. Do NOT induce sputum

- Bronchial Alveolar Lavage:
Collect a minimum volume of 1 mL of BAL. Transfer sample to a sterile container
Requisition: LHSC COVID-19 REQUISITION
Test Schedule: Testing is performed 7 days per week at PaLM Microbiology. Specimens received on swab media not validated at LHSC will be forwarded to Public Health.
- Lower respiratory specimens will be tested in-house
- Other requests may be forwarded to PHL for testing
