Wound Material (abscesses, lesions from skin, subcutaneous or mucous membranes).
Collection Information: Blood/Bone Marrow: Collect blood culture set using a 6 mL Green (Sodium Heparin)top Vacutainer tube.

CSF - Submit 2 mL in a sterile container.

Body Fluids - Clean the puncture site, disinfect and allow to dry. Aspirate fluid or purulent material with needle syringe. Place in a sterile container.

Sputum - Have the patient rinse mouth and gargle with water. Instruct the patient not to expectorate saliva or postnasal discharge. Collect an early morning specimen from a deep productive cough on three consecutive days. Select blood-stained or purulent portion and send in a sterile container.
Tracheal Aspiration - Collect as much as possible and send in a sterile container.
Bronchial Wash - Submit 5 mL in a sterile container.

Tissue or Biopsy Material - Biopsy material should be taken near the periphery of the lesion. Specimen should be placed in a sterile container. Add a small amount of saline to keep moist during transit.

Wound Material - Express pus or aspirate material from cysts or abscesses. Scrape crusted portions from deep centre and edge of active lesion. Place in a sterile container and add a small amount of saline to keep moist during transit.
Test Schedule: Samples are referred weekdays to the Public Health Lab.
