Details for Glucose,CSF

Test Name: Glucose,CSF
Alternate Name(s):
Laboratory: Core
Specimen Type: CSF
Collection Information: A minimum volume of 2 mL of CSF is required.

CSF must NOT be collected into any anticoagulant container.
Test Schedule: As required
Turnaround time from when specimen
is received in testing laboratory:

Reference Range: 2.2-3.9 mmol/L
Effective Date:
Revised Date: 2014-02-25
Critical Value:
Interpretive Comments: Useful in investigation of possible central nervous system (CNS) infection. It may be helpful in differentiating bacterial from viral etiology.

Result should be compared with simultaneous blood glucose.
CSF glucose levels are normally about 60% of blood glucose levels.
Normal reference range of 2.2-3.9 mmol/L applies to CSF glucose when blood glucose is normal.

Low values with normoglycemia may indicate bacterial meningitis or tuberculous disease.
Special Processing:
Method of Analysis: Enzymatic rate
Critical Information Required:
Storage & Shipment: Handle specimens in stoppered containers to avoid contamination and evaporation.
