Specimen Type: 4 x 6 mL Green (Sodium Heparin) top Vacutainer tube without gel separator
This is the preferred specimen.
-Order HLA B27 Serology (B27)

or

2 x 4mL Lavender (EDTA) top Vacutainer tubes
-Use when leukocyte irregularities are possible or if the transit time is expected to exceed 24 hours
-Order HLAB27 Special Order (SSP)
Collection Information: This test is only available to patients from LHSC or SJHC.

Friday draws should be avoided, if possible. Draw the samples (4 x 6 mL Green NaHep tubes) early in the morning if a Friday draw is unavoidable and order HLAB27 Serology (B27).

When a later Friday draw is absolutely necessary, draw 2 x 4 mL Lavender EDTA tubes and order HLA B27 Special Order (SSP).

Interpretive Comments: HLA B27 Positive indicates that the patient expresses HLA B27 antigen on his/her cells.

HLA B27 Negative indicates that the patient does not express HLA B27 antigen on his/her cells.
