Test Name: Polyoma Virus

BK Virus:
-4 mL Lavender top EDTA Vacutainer tube (2 mL of plasma required)

JC Virus:
-A minimum of 600 L of CSF
-EDTA plasma (2 mL)
-Urine (20 mL)
-CNS biopsy
Collection Information: BK Virus-Collect blood aseptically in a Lavender top EDTA Vacutainer tube.

Samples collected late in the day must be spun and plasma separated within 4 hours. Store at 4C for shipment the next morning. If there is a delay of more than 24 hours, plasma MUST be frozen at -80C.
Test Schedule: BK Virus is tested weekly on Tuesday and Thursday.

JC Virus is referred Monday-Wednesday to the National Microbiology Lab.

After 9 pm: Centrifuge and aliquot plasma. Refrigerate and send to Microbiology the following morning

BK Virus test is available for kidney and hematopoietic stem cell transplant patients only. Tests will not be performed more than once in a 14 day period.

Critical Information Required:  
Storage & Shipment: JC Virus-The specimen must be refrigerated and sent to Microbiology for referral within 24 hours of collection.
-Samples must be sent frozen on dry ice to the reference laboratory.

BK Virus- Must be received in lab within 4 hours of collection or separated and frozen at -20C
