BK Virus:
4 mL Lavender top EDTA Vacutainer tube
-2 mL of plasma required

JC Virus:
-A minimum of 600 µL of CSF
-CNS biopsy
- Urine (20 mLs)
Collection Information: JC Virus-Collect a minimum of 600 Ls of CSF in a sterile container.

BK Virus-Collect blood aseptically in a lavender top EDTA Vacutainer tube
Test Schedule: BK Virus is tested weekly on Tuesday and Thursday.
JC Virus is referred Monday-Wednesday to the National Microbiology Lab.
Turnaround time from when specimen
is received in testing laboratory:
BK Virus: 3-5 days
JC Virus: 12 days

After 9 pm: Centrifuge and aliquot plasma. Refrigerate and send to Microbiology the following morning

BK Virus test is available for kidney and hematopoietic stem cell transplant patients only. Tests will not be performed more than once in a 14 day period. Samples MUST be spun, separated and refrigerated at 4C if there is a delay of ≥4 hours to the Microbiology laboratory

Critical Information Required:  
Storage & Shipment: JC Virus-The specimen must be refrigerated and sent to Microbiology for referral within 24 hours of collection.
-Samples must be sent frozen on dry ice to the reference laboratory.

BK Virus- Samples MUST be spun, separated and refrigerated at 4C if there is a delay of ≥4 hours to the Microbiology Laboratory
