Critical Value:
Interpretive Comments: In the follow-up of thyroidectomized patients, a concentration > 0.2 g/L is suspicious for local or metastatic disease.

In non-thyroidectomized patients, a concentration greater than the reference interval is not diagnostic of cancer.

This assay is to be used to monitor patients who have had thyroidectomy for cancer. It is not recommended for use as a screening test for the initial diagnosis of carcinoma of the thyroid.

The presence of anti-thyroglobulin antibodies may cause falsely low (or less likely, falsely high) thyroglobulin measurements.

Measurement of anti-thyroglobulin antibodies is automatically performed with each serum/plasma thyroglobulin test order.
