Details for Triglycerides, Plasma

Test Name: Triglycerides, Plasma
Alternate Name(s):
Laboratory: Core
Specimen Type: 4.5 mL Green top Vacutainer

0-2 years: 0.5 mL Green top Microtainer
2-10 years: 3 mL Green top
Collection Information: Collect blood aseptically in a Vacutainer tube.

Minimum volume required for a pediatric sample is 0.2 mL
Test Schedule: As required
Turnaround time from when specimen
is received in testing laboratory:
24 hours
Reference Range: * See interpretation of lipid profile
Increased risk of cardiovascular disease at triglycerides level greater than 2.0 mmol/L; increased risk of acute pancreatitis at triglycerides level greater than 10.0 mmol/L (Lancet 2014;384:626-635).
Effective Date: 2008-11-15
Revised Date: 2015-04-24
Critical Value:
Interpretive Comments: Triglyceride:
Suggested optimal plasma triglyceride concentration is <1.50 mmol/L. Triglyceride level >10.00 mmol/L is a risk factor for pancreatitis
Special Processing:
Comments: Cholesterol target levels are dependent upon patient 10-year risk of coronary artery disease (Can J Cardiol 2013;29:151-67).

Dicynone (Etamsylate) at therapeutic concentrations may lead to false‑low results and Ascorbic acid and calcium dobesilate cause artificially low triglyceride results. Intralipid is directly measured as analyte in this assay and leads to high triglyceride results.
Method of Analysis: Enzymatic Colorimetric
