Collection Information: Collect secretion from the mucosal membrane of the vaginal vault with a sterile swab and place in transport media.

Note: This sample is not processed as a STAT request. Samples are handled in a priority sequence and results are reported as they become available.
Test Schedule: Daily

Microscopic results are available same day.
Culture (if done) requires a minimum of 48 hours.

Special Processing: If indicated, pre or post partum samples can be screened by culture for Group B Streptococcus. Request Streptococcal Group B Screen. [GBS]

Post gynecology surgical samples for culture should be ordered as wound cultures [WNDC]
Comments: Vaginal swabs are examined microscopically for bacterial vaginosis, Trichomonas and yeast.

Specimens from pre-pubescent females will also be processed by culture.

When clinical data such as toxic shock syndrome or Listeriosis is indicated, vaginal samples, will be processed by culture.

This information must accompany initial orders.
Method of Analysis: Culture and microscopic analysis
Critical Information Required: If the swab is being collected after a sexual assault, this must be indicated on the request.
Storage & Shipment: The specimen must be stored at room temperature.

The specimen must be received within 24 hours of collection.
