Laboratory: Microbiology (VH)
Specimen Type: Samples from abscess, burns, cellulitis, drainage, incisions, lesions or ulcers. Tissue or fluid is always superior to swab specimens. Sampling of surface area can introduce colonizing bacteria not involved in the infectious process.
Collection Information: Remove surface material by wiping with sterile saline or 70% alcohol.

Aspirate material, if possible, or pass swab deep into area of inflammation.

Transfer sample to appropriate transport media (Dry swabs are unacceptable):
i) anaerobic transport media will allow for investigation of both aerobic and anaerobic organisms
ii) aerobic transport will limit investigation to aerobic organisms
iii) viral transport must be used to isolate virus
iv) drainage or bulk specimens may be sent in a sterile container
